Hydroplaning occurs when the rain has built up too quickly to recede by the weight of your car. It is the equivalent of being on a shield of ice and typically occurs during heavy downpours of rain.

In order to prevent hydroplaning, you should maintain a reasonable speed limit based on the weather conditions. It’s also never a good idea to increase the speed above the posted limit to pass another vehicle when it’s raining. There are times when you will get a “false start” of a hydroplaning event. If you feel your vehicle is about to hydroplane, immediately take your foot off the accelerator and do not use the brake. Both techniques can prevent the event from being worse, or stop a full hydroplaning event.
